Welcome! Whether you're discovering Nurses to the Mic for the first time or have been following along since the beginning, this page answers the most common questions about the initiative and how to get involved.

What is Nurses to the Mic?

Nurses to the Mic is a newsletter that connects nurses with media opportunities.

Subscribers receive requests from journalists, podcasts, conferences, and other media outlets looking for healthcare experts. If an opportunity aligns with your background, you can submit yourself for consideration.

The goal is simple: help more nurses share their expertise in the media.

How did Nurses to the Mic get started?

Nurses to the Mic was founded by me, Kate Karlsson. After nearly a decade as an ICU nurse, I transitioned into healthcare communications and founded Systole Media, where I help healthcare executives, clinicians, and companies with writing, public relations, media outreach, and thought leadership.

As part of that work, I spend my days monitoring requests from journalists looking for expert sources. Many of those requests weren't relevant to my clients but were excellent opportunities for nurses. Others specifically requested physicians, even though a nurse's perspective would have been equally valuable.

Rather than letting those opportunities go to waste, I started sharing them with my nursing network and connecting interested nurses with journalists.

That simple idea became Nurses to the Mic.

Why does Nurses to the Mic exist?

Nurses represent approximately 50% of the global healthcare workforce, yet research consistently shows they appear in only 2–4% of healthcare news stories as quoted sources.

This gap limits the perspectives represented in health reporting and overlooks the clinicians closest to patients and care delivery.

Nurses to the Mic exists to help close that gap by:

  • Connecting nurses with media opportunities.

  • Raising awareness of nurse underrepresentation in the media.

  • Encouraging more nurses to become media-trained and engage with journalists.

Who is this for?

Any nurse is welcome to subscribe.

Some opportunities are looking for bedside nurses, while others seek nurse practitioners, educators, researchers, executives, entrepreneurs, or specialists in a particular field.

Each opportunity includes its own eligibility criteria and requested qualifications. If your background matches the request, you're welcome to submit yourself for consideration.

How does it work?

When a relevant opportunity becomes available, subscribers receive an email with the details.

If you're interested, review the request carefully and submit your information before the deadline.

Please pay close attention to what is being requested. Journalists often ask for specific details such as your credentials, experience, contact information, availability, or a short quote. Including everything requested in your initial submission helps us avoid unnecessary back-and-forth and ensures deadlines aren't missed.

How are nurses selected?

Nurses to the Mic shares opportunities. It does not select interviewees or guarantee media placements.

Final decisions are made by the journalist, producer, conference organizer, or podcast host based on the needs of the story and the submissions they receive.

Is there a cost?

No. There will always be a free version of Nurses to the Mic, and there is no cost to subscribe or apply for opportunities shared through the newsletter.

How often will I receive emails?

The goal is to send at least one email per week, with a maximum of two emails per week.

Some weeks may have fewer opportunities than others, while other weeks may have several. Rather than sending every request that comes across my desk, I'll curate the opportunities most relevant to nurses and share those with subscribers.

What types of opportunities are shared?

Opportunities vary throughout the year and may include:

  • News articles and expert commentary

  • Podcasts

  • Television and radio interviews

  • Conference speaking opportunities

  • Quote requests for print and digital media

From time to time, Nurses to the Mic receives sponsorship support that funds additional opportunities for nurses, such as conference tickets, interviews, or podcast appearances. These are offered to subscribers through periodic giveaways.

Can I use AI to help write my submission?

A little proofreading or help organizing your thoughts is fine, but please avoid submitting responses that are largely AI-generated.

Journalists are looking for your experience, perspective, and expertise. Generic responses tend to sound similar, lack specificity, and are easy to spot. If a journalist wanted a generic overview of a topic, they could generate one themselves.

The strongest submissions are personal, specific, and grounded in your own experience.

Are these opportunities only for U.S. nurses?

No.

While many opportunities come from U.S.-based journalists and organizations, I also share opportunities from other countries. Each post will specify any location requirements. If none are listed and your experience is relevant, you're welcome to apply.
